Smoke

3 out of 5 stars

I have to admit that for a while, I thought this story was ambling too slowly. There is a fire burning but the story seemed to be moving at a snail’s pace but as we reach the climax, I had my light bulb moment. It was exactly how the fire and story worked. Slowly, they both moved leading up to the height of their conflict. Would the fire rage on? Would Ben and Elizabeth end?

Elizabeth has been fighting fires for so long that even though she isn’t in the “business” anymore, she can’t help but be drawn to it and this one is threatening her house. This past year has not been a good one for her and her husband. They are separating. Her friendship with Mindy has ended because of some words that should not have been said. And now this big fire. It also involves Mindy’s son. Was he responsible for the fire?

Like I said, it slowly takes you into their lives and unveils the secrets that they all have. Elizabeth might not have been the most sympathetic character. I didn’t get her need to leave Ben but it didn’t take away from reading on and finding out just who caused the fire and how things would turn out for them all. Not my favorite of her books but still a good read.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
