What the heck did I just read and why did I like it so much?! Joe is the ultimate antihero. He does some horrendous stuff throughout this book but I could not help liking him. It almost makes me feel dirty!
Joe sees Guinevere Beck in the East Village bookstore he works in and he’s immediately taken by her. Taken might be too light a term for what he is by her. Her friends call her Beck and he begins stalking her. He gets a hold of an old phone and follows her emails and her calls and her texts. He learns a lot about her and slowly works his way into her life. They have a relationship that means more to Joe than to Beck but Joe has his own way of looking at things and the people around her.
I don’t want to give a lot a way but Joe does a lot of very bad things throughout this book. He doesn’t see them as bad things. I am not sure what Joe sees but he feels justified in everything and you start to buy the justification. This book is probably not for everyone. It has some profanity and crude sexual talk but it fits so well in the storyline. It didn’t bother me but it will probably bother some. I loved the bits of literary references peppered through the story. And I loved Joe. I hate to say it but I did! The ending leads us into the next book titled Hidden Bodies (which should explain a lot about Joe). It comes out in February and I do have a copy already. As hard as it is, I am going to wait until closer to publication date to see what happens with Joe.
I happily received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
